“Tough times don’t last but tough people do”
“Nothing lasts forever”
“It’s always darkest before dawn”
“The sun will rise again in the morning”
These are all lines that are so easy to say, believe and apply during good times or when giving advice and are not personally faced with a season in your life where you don’t see a silver lining, where you see no reason to wake up in the morning, when you are hopeless and don’t see life changing for the better, or when you are faced with a drastic life changing event like retrenchment.
So the question really is: how does one remain positive and keep the faith during times of adversity?
I believe that it all starts with the constant reminder that your mind is your most powerful weapon and your greatest asset, keep your mind STRONG! When you become disheartened and your mind believes that life is “over”, you are not able to fully express your potential and it blurs your vision causing you to possibly miss out on great future opportunities.
“When you’re standing at the edge of a cliff deciding whether to take that leap of faith or go back into your small shell, fear will whisper in your ear “What if you fail?”. Oh but my dear WHAT IF YOU FLY?!”
It is critical to keep yourself busy and not allow yourself to wallow in self-pity, remembering that self-pity will benefit you in no way. If it helps, find a new, positive, hobby that will keep your body and your mind occupied.
Throw yourself out there and take risks. Be unconventional. Playing safe benefits no one, least of all you.
One of my favorite illustrations which I try to live by and has kept me is:
“When you’re standing at the edge of a cliff deciding whether to take that leap of faith or go back into your small shell, fear will whisper in your ear “What if you fail?”. Oh but my dear WHAT IF YOU FLY?!”
